Awareness is not thinking
The two get confused constantly, and the confusion costs people years.

The two get confused constantly, and the confusion costs people years.
Thinking is the activity. It plans, compares, rehearses the argument you did not win, and runs the same worry around the same track at three in the morning. It is useful and it is tiring, and it is almost always about a moment that is not this one.
Awareness is the room the thinking happens in.
You can test this in about ten seconds. Notice that you are thinking. In the instant you notice, something is doing the noticing — and that something was not part of the thought. It was there before the thought arrived and it is still there after the thought goes.
This is why "stop thinking" is bad advice. Nobody can stop thinking, and trying harder only produces a louder thought about not thinking. What can be done is far simpler: step back one pace and watch. The thinking continues. You are no longer inside it.
A still pond does not stop the wind. It simply does not pretend the ripples are the water.
Practically, this changes what a difficult day feels like. The circumstances do not shift. What shifts is that you are no longer identical with the reaction to them, and that small distance is where every choice you have actually lives.
Start with ten seconds. Notice that you are thinking. That is the whole beginning.
