Two questions at the end of the day

A small evening practice, and it takes two minutes.

What was good today? Something specific. Not a grateful list, one real thing — the tea, ten minutes of sun, somebody being kind without reason.

What is unfinished? Not the task list. The unfinished feeling. The conversation you did not have, the thing you meant to say.

Naming the second one is what lets you put it down. Unnamed, it waits for you at two in the morning, which is the worst hour to meet anything.

Both questions, then sleep.

Rest is not the same as stopping

You can stop working and get no rest at all. Most of us prove this every evening.

Scrolling is stopping. So is collapsing in front of something loud. The work pauses and the nervous system does not, which is why four hours of it can leave you more tired than when you began.

Rest is different. Rest is the thing that puts something back. For some people that is silence, for others it is music, a long bath, hands in soil, a conversation with somebody who does not want anything.

Worth knowing which is which for you — and worth knowing that you probably have not asked.

What actually rests you?

Say precisely what you feel

Most of us have four words for everything: fine, tired, stressed, okay.

Four words cannot hold a life. And something unhelpful happens when the vocabulary is too small — the feeling has nowhere accurate to land, so it stays, unnamed and unexamined, and leaks into the evening.

Try being precise. Not stressed, but rushed. Not fine, but relieved. Not tired, but depleted, which is a different thing and asks for a different remedy.

The precision itself does something. A feeling that has been named exactly tends to settle, because it has finally been heard.

What is the more precise word for how you are today?

That is the beginning. You have seen every one of the posts.
